Rachel and Mark meet at a mutual friend's wedding and get married shortly
afterwards. All goes well initially with the marriage, despite the fact they endure months of
renovation by incompetent
builders on their Washington home. A child is born, Mark proves himself a fond father, and
another baby is soon on the way. Then Rachel discovers that Mark has been having an affair
with one of their circle. Based on Nora Ephron's autobiographical novel. |

Meryl Streep, Entertainment Weekly, March 2000
"How was it? Scary. [Nicholson] terrified me. He was Jack Nicholson! [laughs] I only became
'emeritus' recently, and he's been that for years. He was a force of nature, very, very funny,
a friend of Mike's, and so I thought, 'is there gonna be room for me?' There was... I was
pregnant again. I got pregnant in Africa. And I got really, really sick, with something African!
[laughs] So I look at 'Heartburn' and all I can see is my green, green, green face."
Catherine O'Hara, Toronto Star, July 1986
"It's only the first day, and here's Mike [Nichols] telling Meryl I had done her on SCTV once.
Then he calls me over to explain the skit to her. So it was like 'Well, uh, Miss Streep... John
Candy and Joe Flaherty did these two country bumpkin characters and they would have guests on
their little talk show and then, umm, blow them up. So I went on as you and, well, I got blown
up." Hard enough for her to describe, let alone stand there watching Streep watching her doing
Streep when Nichols decided to run a tape of the SCTV sketch at the Heartburn wrap party.
"People kept coming up to me and saying 'Meryl is watching it! Meryl is watching it!' And her
face is like this close to the monitor. Afterward she came up to me and said 'I saw what you
did to me!' But she laughed. It's a compliment to be impersonated." "Very funny," the superstar actress responds
later with mock sarcasm. "Just wait'll she sees me do her!"

The movie is based on Nora Ephron's real-life marriage to, and divorce from, 'Carl Bernstein' and the birth of their two sons.

Jack Nicholson's performance of "Soliloquy" ("My Boy Bill") from Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel (1956) is a nod to writer Nora Ephron's parents, Henry Ephron and Phoebe Ephron, who wrote the screenplay for the latter film; Henry Ephron also produced Carousel.

Meryl Streep's actual daughter was used as Annie the baby.

Features the film debut of Kevin Spacey as the subway passenger who robs Meryl Streep's therapy group.

Mandy Patinkin was originally cast as Mark Forman.

This was 'Tony Shaloub' 's first film role. He had a love scene with Meryl Streep but his scenes were cut. Shaloub can still be seen as a passenger on a plane behind Nicholson.
