Frequently cynical screenwriter Charlie Kaufman has just taken on a new assignment. That is,
to adapt writer Susan Orlean's "The Orchid Thief" into a screenplay, all of it based on the
life of the eccentric John Laroche, an exotic plant collector based out of Florida. While his
easygoing twin brother Donald, is writing scripts with ease, Charlie finds himself on a
perpetual struggle that never seems to end. |

Nicolas Cage, The Hollywood Reporter, June 2004
"My first of impression of Meryl was that she had an incredible sense of humor. We were doing
our first scene together, which awkwardly was a love scene; before even hello, she dropped a
condom on me. We both have a tendency to laugh out loud while shooting. I also thought she was
sexy. I think what makes Meryl a great actress is that her instrument is so liquid; everything
flows without sharp edges or unintentionally abrupt changes. I remember her going through some
transformation to get into a scene, and I saw a very beautiful process of shape-shifting that
brought her to the point she intended. I was deeply impressed."

Based on writer Charlie Kaufman's struggle to adapt the best-selling book The Orchid Thief.

This film received an Oscar nomination for "Best Adapted Screenplay," even though the film is not actually an adaptation of "The Orchid Thief", but rather a fictionalized account of an attempt to adapt the book into film.

The book-on-tape, which is playing in the background of the orchid thief's van as Meryl Streep and Chris Cooper drive, is shown on the dashboard momentarily. It appears to be "'The Writings of Charles Darwin,' as read by Brian O'Kelley". There is no such book, no such audio tape. Brian O'Kelley is the assistant director of this movie.

Nicolas Cage has said that during the filming of this movie, he ignored all of his acting instincts and played the part of Charlie Kaufman exactly as director Spike Jonze asked him to. He then received an Academy Award nomination for it.

The character of Robert McKee played by Brian Cox, is a real script guru.
