Jon Stewart: "Rendition"
Meryl Streep: Yes.
Jon Stewart: A period piece? (laughter)
Meryl Streep: Yeah. Um... it's about torture (laughter). And about how we export people
that we suspect with ties to terrorism to other places where they're allowed to "interrogate"
them in ways that wer'e not allowed to here. Well... or that used to not be allowed here.
Jon Stewart: We don't torture.
Meryl Streep: The United States does not torture.
Jon Stewart: Thank you. We changed the definition. How do you - now in this film, you
are, your character, I'll say your character, very scary, very icy, but yet there is
a sense of 'I understand where she's coming from'. That's a very tough trip to pole.
Meryl Streep: Yeah yeah, I agree. I think it's a very hard job. Aren't we glad we don't
have that job? I mean it's a...
Jon Stewart: A balancing act.
Meryl Streep: It's horrid, it's hard. There was a scene in it with Peter Saarsgard where
I'm defending the use of what they call "enchanced interriogation" and techniques. And I
thought it wasn't personal enough so I imagined what it would be like and the director would
let me write a little bit of it. And it was that thing, you know Guiliani said that there
had been 24 plots that have been foiled around the world, pre-empted by the use of information
gleemed in this way. So you're sort of in a balancing act. One guy's life worth the 7000
people in Central London that I imagined.
