An independent, single mother who owns a small hotel on an idyllic Greek island is about
to let go of the spirited daughter she’s raised alone. For Sophie’s wedding, Donna has
invited her two lifelong best girlfriends—practical and no-nonsense Rosie and wealthy, multi-divorcee
Tanya - from her one-time backing band, Donna and the Dynamos.
But Sophie has secretly invited three guests of her own. On a quest to find the identity
of her father to walk her down the aisle, she brings back three men from Donna’s past to
the Mediterranean paradise they visited 20 years earlier. Over 24 chaotic, magical
hours, new love will bloom and old romances will be rekindled on this lush island full of
possibilities. |

Meryl Streep, The Daily Telegraph, July 2008
"Benny (Andersson) vehemently denies this, but I know he retained the right to veto any choices right till
the very end. He had this little twinkle in his eye and he was very welcoming. But about
halfway through, I realised I was doing an audition, and that if everything did not go
well I would not be doing the musical. And then I got really nervous."
Meryl Streep, The Guardian, July 2008
"Everybody was really dimmed spiritually after 9/11. I thought, 'What am I going to do
with the kids?' So I took all these 10-year-olds to see a matinee of Mamma Mia!. They
walked in and they sat there with their heads in their hands. Dimmed is the word - they
were sad all the time, you know? The first part was really wordy, and then Dancing Queen
started up. And for the rest of the show they were dancing on their chairs and they were
so, so happy. We all went out of the theatre floating on the air. I thought, 'What a gift
to New York right now'.
I keep getting asked about the scene with the splits [while jumping on the bed]. They ask
- was there a body double? Yeah, right! Or was it CGI? Of course! They grafted my face on
to Olga Korbut's body. I just did the splits on instinct. That's what always happens with
my acting. As an actor, you're not allowed to think. I couldn't do the splits for you
right now."

"Mamma Mia!" was the first film to be shot on the new 007 Stage at Pinewood Studios
following a fire after Casino Royale (2006) wrapped. The new 59,000 sq ft stage was used
for song and dance numbers that could not be filmed in the sun in Greece. Bill Nighy was
in talks to play one of the three dads.
