Meryl receives Golden Globe nomination for "Angels"

Meryl has been mentioned with a nomination for the Golden Globe as Best Actress in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture made for Television for her work in "Angels in America". She shares the category with Judy Davis (The Reagans), Jessica Lange (Normal), Helen Mirren (The Romance of Mrs. Stone) and Maggie Smith (My House in Umbria). "Angels in America" received 6 more nominations for Best Picture (Television), Al Pacino, Mary- Louise Parker and the supporting actors Ben Shenkman, Patrick Wilson and Jeffrey Wright. The Golden Globes are handed out on January 25, 2004

"Angels" is the most watched television event of the Year

The first installment of the HBO miniseries "Angels in America" took 4.2 million viewers under its wings Sunday, making it the premium cable channel's highest-rated movie this year. The three-hour block, which premiered at 8 p.m., drew an 8.6 household rating/12 share in HBO homes. "Angels" held up well over its running time, dipping only as low as an 8.1 at its lowest point of the evening. Report is courtesy Yahoo.

Meryl to receive Lifetime Achievement by the American Film Institute

The American Film Institute will honor Meryl Streep with its 32nd Life Achievement Award. The film organization's board of trustees selected the 54-year-old star to receive its highest honor. Streep is set to accept the award June 10 at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood in a ceremony that will air on USA Network. "Her talent, range and determination to master her craft bring out performances that sometimes border on the ethereal," trustee chair Howard Stringer said Friday. Meryl Streep served as auctioneer to help sell artwork in Fort Meyers to benefit survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. On the laser print "Jarros," Streep sweetened the pot, saying - quote - "Maybe a kiss. Maybe a French kiss," The bids jumped until the gavel finally fell at $3,500. Meryl Streep to star in "The Manchurian Candidate"

Meryl at the Oscars, but supporting award went to Zeta-Jones

It wasn't really a surprise when Catherine Zeta-Jones was announced in the Best Supporting Actress category for which Meryl has won her 13th nomination for "Adaptation". Later in the show, she presented the Lifetime Achivement Award to Peter O'Toole. Nicole Kidman won the trophy for "The Hours", so did Chris Cooper for "Adaptation"

Streep to present Oscar for the first time

Meryl accepts Kaufman's British Academy Award

Altough she lost to Catherine Zeta-Jones in the Best Supporting Actress category, Meryl Streep entered the stage at the British Academy Awards for giving perhaps the evening's best moment - Streep read aloud Kaufman's "faxed" acceptance speech, which was as funny as Adaptation and even funnier read by Streep. Kaufman won for Best Adapted Screenplay, Nicole Kidman was named Best Actress for "The Hours"

This morning, Meryl received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for "Adaptation". Other nominees in this category are Kathy Bates, Julianne Moore, Queen Latifah and Catherine Zeta-Jones. "The Hours" was nominated in 9 categories, inlcuding Best Picture. The Oscars will be handed out on March 23, 2003.

Streep calls Academy Award a political campaign

Meryl has poured scorn on the race for Oscar glory, saying the movie industry's most celebrated event had almost deteriorated into a "political campaign" She said she found the quest for Academy Awards distasteful. "I find it alarming that all the campaigning for Oscars is getting like a political campaign," she told Tuesday's Daily Telegraph newspaper. The press published her quotes more negative than she originally stated them in an interesting article, which you can read in the press section.

Streep put in wrong SAG category

A studio mistake left Meryl Streep competing against herself for the Screen Actors Guild Awards, possibly costing her one if not two nominations. A Sony spokesman said a studio employee incorrectly submitted Streep's name in the lead-actress category for "Adaptation". The studio considers it a supporting-actress role and has been pushing Streep in that category for other film awards. The mistake may have split Streep's votes between "Adaptation" and her other contending role for "The Hours," which Paramount also had submitted in the lead-actress category.
