MERYL STREEP'S MADE FOR THIS ROLE

IT'S a long way from playing Lindy Chamberlain in the movie Evil Angels, but get ready for the all-singing-and-dancing Meryl Streep when the on-screen adaptation of the stage hit Mamma Mia opens next week. The 58-year-old Streep, who has the lead role in what is being tipped as one of the year's blockbuster movie releases, dazzles with slick dancing -- including the splits -- and powerful singing, including a heartfelt rendition of the classic Abba song The Winner Takes It All. Streep and her fellow stars from Mamma Mia arrived in Greece yesterday to promote the movie, inspired by the musical, inspired by the music of Swedish '70s supergroup Abba.

The film was mostly shot on the picturesque Greek island of Skopelos. It tells the story of a mother, played by Streep, who is confronted by three potential fathers of her daughter on the eve of her nuptials. In what will be a spotting exercise for fans of the band, Abba songwriters Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson revealed they appear briefly in the movie in cameo roles. While some were surprised that Streep, known more for her dramatic roles, got the nod for the Mamma Mia lead, the actor said yesterday that she jumped at the opportunity. ``They called and said, `You probably won't be interested', but . . . I said, `Are you crazy? I would love to do this','' said Streep, who had formal training as a singer early in her career. An industry insider who has seen the film, which opens in Australia on July 10, said: ``Meryl is very good, it's a revelation.''
