No final word so far if Meryl is indeed going to play Margaret Thatcher, although it sounds pretty much a done deal according to this article from the Telegraph: Although the prospect of Meryl Streep playing Margaret Thatcher may have pleased some admirers of the Conservative former prime minister, her children have been horrified to discover more about the film. Mandrake hears that the screenplay of The Iron Lady depicts Baroness Thatcher as an elderly dementia-sufferer looking back on her career with sadness. She is shown talking to herself and unaware that her husband, Sir Denis Thatcher, has died.
“Sir Mark and Carol are appalled at what they have learnt about the film,” says a friend of the family. “They think it sounds like some Left-wing fantasy. They feel strongly about it, but will not speak publicly for fear of giving it more publicity.” Cameron McCracken, the managing director of the film-maker Pathé, confirms: “It is true that the film is set in the recent past and that Baroness Thatcher does look back on both the triumphs and the lows of her extraordinary career. “It is a film about power and the price that is paid for power. In that sense, it is the story of every person who has ever had to balance their private life with their public career.” He says Lady Thatcher’s health will be featured, but insists that it will be “treated with appropriate sensitivity”. He adds of the film: “Although fictional, it will be fair and accurate.”

This will be a bit weird after “The Manchurian Candidate.” (After that one came out and during the little press junket, everyone kept asking her if she’d based Eleanor Shaw on Maggie Thatcher.)

Well, I think it´s totally understandeble the concer, i mean, of her children, thatcher´s of course, There are two women in this world to play this and role, the way that´s supose to be done properly Sonja, already said it, Helen Mirren and Meryl Streep, and now it´s the Streep turn. I can´t imagine Meryl Streep being unrespectful or undelicate to this wonderful woman, who left such a huch standart to humanity, and did so much for her country.
Besides, nobody will let touch or shows something that goes in her detriment, come on, everybody knows that, not for nothing, she was THE IRON LADY

I really agree and think that if anyone can play Margaret Thatcher fairly it is Meryl Streep, she will be able to step into her character giving and showing her respect . Meryl can show two sides to a character, for example making them not a nice person on one side, but then you learn to like them on another…and the example of Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada that Barbi used is just perfect, i really hope Meryl takes the role as i know she will play it to perfection!

I truely can understand the fear of Thatcher’s children, but Meryl is an actress who always demands to make her character, if not likeable, then at least human and not a plain caricature.
If Meryl plays Thatcher, she’ll play her with the same respect as Helen Mirren played Elisabeth II. in “The Queen” for sure.

I totally agree with lauren…I thought Meryl has gotten the role already…well, according to what the radio said…Wikipedia also said that ‘the iron lady’ is already in pre-production(in meryl’s page)…anyway,I really hope Meryl will take on that movie despite what people say about it.

I really hope she’ll take the role! I haven’t seen much of meryls movies, but from what I’ve seen… she isn’t a mainstream actress! I really would love to see her as margaret thatcher and hopefully she wins the oscar, too! She deserves it!

I agree with Lauren, Meryl is the only actress that could perfectly play Thatcher. I can’t remember if something like this happened when The Queen was being discussed, but i think this kind of things always happen. Making some kind of analogy with Devir Wears Prada, Miranda Priestly was almost the ‘iron lady’ of fashion, and Meryl found the way to show that and her human, sensible side too.
I don’t think M. Thatcher would be played just as a crazy woman, Meryl is the one to give an image of her that no one has ever given.

I’m sure the film will be balanced and fair. I can understand the criticism that Thatcher is depicted as regretting things she may acually be proud of but hopefully the script will be sensetive. I think this angle of an older woman looking back on her career is very interesting. I so hope it works out so Meryl can do this!

I am sure its not the choice of Meryl is what is appalling, there are so many communists in Britain they probably don’t want it to be a piece of leftie propaganda. I think Maggie Smith would be better, but I guess she is too old and not commercial enough, so Meryl would be great, better than Lindsay Lohan anyway.

they were bound to say something, probably they think the film will give the impression of thatcher, and because she wasn’t exactly well-liked by some of the british people at the time the film was set, however out of all the people to play thatcher, i’m sure when they see the final piece, they will glad and proud that meryl streep took the role. because she is the only actress that could play her to perfection, so i’m sure they will be pleased. really hope meryl does take the role, it’s deffs an oscar win for sure.
