Much has been written in the British press since the first promotional still for “The Iron Lady” has been published. It’s sometimes difficult to interpret the UK press since they’re either very pro or anti Thatcher, which ultimately influences the tone of their articles. First, the Daily Mail has reported that Meryl Streep was not able to talk to Margaret Thatcher herself. “Margaret Thatcher refused to meet actress Meryl Streep to discuss a new film about the former Prime Minister over fears that it could distort her 11 years in power.” Unfortunately there is no further source for this stated. Then, also courtesy the Daily Mail, pictures from the set have been revealed. “New shots of the actress on set showed a different side of the legendary politician. Meryl, filmed a scene [on February 11, 2011] in which the ex-PM gives daughter Carol a driving lesson in an old Austin Maxi.” Then, there’s more analysis on the first promotional still and Meryl’s ability to perform by the Telegraph. And lastly, according to the Guardian, Meryl Streep’s Margaret Thatcher reveals a modern icon. The photograph of Meryl Streep as Thatcher reminds us of the potent combination that created the image of an “Iron Lady”.

@Emily
The joke is, Cate Blanchett is AUSTRALIAN, not british. ;)
“The Iron Lady” will be very converse anyway.
Not only because of the contend and the director…. People even complain Meryl’s only doing light comedy roles lately “without challenging characters” (where of course I’d like to disagree).
No one with a straight face can tell that playing Magaret Thatcher is not challenging.
I wish her all the best for this and I’m sure she will archieve it.

Wow, you’re correct about the continuum of responses about Maggie. She is either revered or reviled. I thought some of the comments in the Telegraph about Ms. Streep’s acting abilities rather snobbish and completely off the wall- and tried to comment in that section but even though I created an account, was locked out. Anyway, I cannot wait to see Meryl’s portrayl of Thatcher. Mostly because I can’t wait to see Meryl in a film again and I found this season rather empty without her. All the arguing about Thatcher will undoubtedly continue–so what!. We all know how wonderful Meryl is in any role.
Thanks for your continuous updates and the terrific site that I love to visit.

People are not really trusting in Meryl as M.T. and probably most of them are british….. Because H. Mirren as The Queen was spetacular, C. Blanchett was amazing as Elizabeth…. What if Meryl wants to incporporate her fisics aspects? Doesn’t it mean she is more concerned with appearence than “WORK”. Come on…. Or are they being so negative , just bc a NON-British actress is goning to “be” an very important, influencial British icon? I think it’s too pessimism and negativity… She is capable, we all know it. Can’t they just give her a leap of faith, for christsake.

As you note the British press is very ideologically divided over Thatcher. In regard to the very right wing Daily Mail it is important to note that this paper has been leading the charge against “The Iron Lady” since the film was first announced calling a movie that had not even been filmed “appalling” and “disgusting .” It is not a reliable souce for news about the film.
