As “The Iron Lady” has been screened for journalists in the United Kingdom these past days, many outlets have published their first reviews, and here’s a summary. David Gritten at The Telegraph said: “Awards should be coming Streep’s way; yet her brilliance rather overshadows the film itself.” The Guardian Xan Brooks said Streep’s performance “is astonishing and all but flawless”. He added: “Yet Streep, it transpires, is the one great weapon of this often silly and suspect picture.” The Daily Mail also praised Streep’s portrayal. Critic Baz Bamigboye wrote: “Only an actress of Streep’s stature could possibly capture Thatcher’s essence and bring it to the screen. The film follows Baroness Thatcher from her early years breaking through class and gender barriers to become prime minister to her political downfall in 1990. The Thatcher era from 1979 to 1990, was a time of social and economic change for Britain. Elected following a period of widespread strikes, dubbed the winter of discontent, Lady Thatcher and her Conservative government embarked on tough reforms to tackle inflation and the trade unions. Her policies divided the country – seeing a boom in the service sector and home ownership but a decline in manufacturing and soaring unemployment.

Bette Davis during the early 40′s gave atonishing perfect performances one after the other richly deserving of an Oscar but she was passed over to lesser performances by other actress’, the same with Meryl Streep in the past two decades. The Academy owe her a third award ( at this point she should have earned her fourth! ) But there is always that actress who’s TIME HAS COME to be rewarded, that’s the academy mentality. I guess it’s all about THE TIME HAS COME, well 2012 it’s Meryl’s time, besides she got Weinstein on her side…

She is quite simply the best!

These reviews are what I expected, that Meryl’s great performance would dominate the film which is seen as a somewhat conventional biopic. This could both help and hurt her in regard to possible awards. We shall see.

Ridiculously excited about this film!! January cannot come soon enough!! Great to see Meryl back – boy have I missed her – and early indications are that this is yet another superb performance! Baz in the Daily Mail wrote that it was her best ever which, after Sophie, is one frightening prospect!!! Soo hoping she picks up number 3 in February – it’s WAY overdue!!

Me thinks Oscar number 3 is coming Meryl’s way. The 29 year wait is over.

I’m so pleased Meryl is gettings raves but I would also like the film itself to be well received and with merit on its’ own terms. I want everything to come out of this well!
