"DARK MATTER" DELAYED OVER SCHOOL SHOOTING PLOT
Posted: 2007-04-26 | Source: Webmaster

Article courtesy The Times Online: Two Hollywood productions face being shelved indefinitely because their stories so grimly echo last week’s massacre on a university campus. Distributors are refusing to touch the films Dark Matter, starring Meryl Streep, which is about an alienated Asian student who shoots fellow students and professors, or The Killer Within, about an American student who goes on a similar rampage. They are wary of taking on films which bear striking parallels to the case of Cho Seung Hui, the Asian student who this month killed 32 students and professors at the Virginia Tech campus before turning his gun on himself in the worst single gun massacre in modern American history. One British distributor, who declined to be named, said: “These films are too close to the knuckle.” Dark Matter, in which Streep plays a university patron who tries to befriend the troubled student, took its inspiration from a 1991 tragedy in which a Chinese physics student opened fire in two buildings on the University of Iowa campus. He killed 6 people including a student and professors. Read the full article here.

MERYL STREEP AND PHILIP SEYMOR HOFFMAN HAVE "DOUBT"
Posted: 2007-04-22 | Source: Webmaster

According to Variety, Oscar-winners Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman will star in "Doubt," the screen adaptation of the John Patrick Shanley play for Miramax Films that begins production in New York on Dec. 1. Shanley wrote the script and will direct. Scott Rudin is producing. Deals are being negotiated with both thesps. "Doubt" takes place in a Bronx Catholic School in 1964, where the principal (Streep), a nun who's a strict disciplinarian, makes pedophile accusations against a popular priest (Hoffman). Still to be cast is a young nun caught between them. "Doubt" won both the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award, and is on tour.

"DARK MATTER" MESSAGE PAINFULLY SHARPENED BY VIRGINIA TECH TRAGEDY
Posted: 2007-04-22 | Source: Webmaster

Article courtesy the Los Angeles Times: One of the most jolting moments at this year's Sundance Film Festival came in the closing sequence of a movie called "Dark Matter": A disaffected Asian college student abruptly snaps and goes on a bloody rampage, killing professors, classmates and, finally, himself. The audience was plainly shocked, and some critics attacked the finale as a jarring gimmick that, narratively, came out of nowhere. "Dark Matter" now, of course, would take on a different context to anyone who sees it following the Virginia Tech shootings on Monday that left 33 people dead, among them Seung-hui Cho, the gunman who took his own life and shares much in common with the character at the center of "Dark Matter." The film, starring Aidan Quinn and Meryl Streep, was actually inspired by another grisly campus crime: The 1991 University of Iowa incident in which Chinese foreign exchange student Gang Lu reacted violently after being passed over for an academic prize and killed five people and left a sixth paralyzed before killing himself. At the close of Sundance, film distributors seemed unsure what to do with such a bleak film, and it was uncertain whether it would be released theatrically or go straight to DVD. Now the film is getting interest again as a theatrical release. Read the full article here.

Looks like April is the big month of movie rumors and announcements. So after drop-outs and casting news , Jennifer Aniston has now mentioned in an interview with " Extra " how excited she is about
working with Meryl Streep. Both actresses have been mentioned half a year ago to star in a movie named "Wanted". The interview gives no insight on when the film is sheduled to start filming or if it's even officially in the making already, but at least it seems to be still on the radar. Click the image to watch the video interview on Extra's website. Here's her quote: 'The actress also broke this news to Extra: in her
her next big screen role she’ll star opposite the ever-talented Meryl Streep. "I don’t know if you ever get over that; it’s Meryl Streep for crying out loud," Jen admitted."

MORE CASTING NEWS, PROJECT RUMORS AND LINCOLN CENTER PICTURE
Posted: 2007-04-16 | Source: Webmaster

On the heels of the "Last Station" drop-out (read below), more news on possible projects and dropouts have been reported today, all a nice sign that not every project in which Meryl is announced to star is really official ;-) So here we go, Variety reports that Meryl is "attached" to "Ann's List", a Sony production about a mother whose daughter died in the 9/11 attacks. The mother discovers her daughter's list of things she would like to do and decides to do them for her.

Then, as it was reported some months ago that Meryl was in talks to star as the late Iranian artist Mokarrameh Qanbari. Now, Fox Film executives announced that the appearance of Meryl Streep in the upcoming film production is uncertain, the Persian service of CHN reported on Sunday. The Fox Film Corporation had purchased the rights to make a biographical film about Qanbari and had wanted to shoot some of the scenes on location in her home village of Darikandeh, near Babol in northern Iran. According to Qanbari's son, the screenplay has now been completed, but it is unclear whether Streep will be taking part in the movie. Ali Bolboli observed that a French actress will probably replace Streep in the film. "I have been following the case for several months with Streep's planning managers, but since her acting schedule is already full, it is uncertain if she will be able to take part. We are still waiting to see her name in the list.

And last but not least, this one is for granted and official - a wonderful b/w picture of Diane Keaton and Meryl at the Lincoln Center Honors, shot by Brigitte Lacombe.

"THE LAST STATION" WITHOUT HOPKINS AND STREEP?
Posted: 2007-04-15 | Source: Webmaster

According to this interview with Anthony Hopkins, promoting his latest feature "Fracture", the announced Tolstoy biopic "The Last Station" with him and Meryl Streep in the leads, has lost its stars.

Q: Are you going to play Tolstoy?
A: No, that all fell through. I don't know what happened to that. They postponed and it was going and then I said, "Look, I've got to get on with my life." I think Meryl Streep was going to do it and I think she pulled out of it basically because it was on and then it was off.
