STREEP AND CRUISE - IN LIKE LIONS, OUT LIKE..?
Posted: 2007-10-23 | Source: Webmaster

In the wake of Rendition's less than impressive opening tally last weekend - number 9 with $4.2 million in box office in a fairly anemic field--Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner's United Artists studio start-up is surely looking carefully at how they position their political drama, Lions For Lambs, for its November 9 release date. It says something that the always crowd-accessible Cruise was even more so, spending over two hours pressing the flesh and doing media chats (print interviews: zero) before last night's London premiere. One would have thought the cumulative star power in Rendition--Jake Gyllenhaal as the muddled CI.A. agent, Reese Witherspoon as the pregnant wife of an Egyptian-born businessman who's snatched by a government squad, and Meryl Streep as the U.S. director of intelligence, with a wickedly cornpone accent - might have added up to more ticket buyers than that the film's $12-million take last weekend. A Wall Street Journal analysis split the blame between a surfeit of intelligent Oscar-style pictures and a general misery fatigue in the audience: A glut of serious-minded Oscar contenders is crowding theaters with disastrous box-office results. The latest, most pronounced casualty, "Things We Lost in the Fire," a Paramount/Dreamworks project loaded with Academy Award honorees, combusted in its initial 1,142-theater rollout, earning just $1.6 million. The film was predicted to make twice that amount... Read the full article here.

MERYL TALKS RENDITION, GYLLENHAAL AND MAMMA MIA
Posted: 2007-10-12 | Source: Webmaster

Taken from an article in USA Today on the Los Angeles premiere of "Rendition": Because of the various locales, much of the cast did not even meet during the shoot, though they shared other connections. “This is increasingly the way it is with complicated interwoven plotlines,” said Meryl Streep, whose ice-cold politician never crosses paths with Gyllenhaal. But Streep has her own personal memories of Jake as a boy. “He was a friend of my son (Henry) in grammar school and would come over to my house to play. I remember... his sister, Maggie, was having a ’20s speakeasy party, and the boys were bartenders." Streep did offer some news on her 2008 Mamma Mia! film. “Shooting Dancing Queen was probably the most fun,” she said, promising, “It’ll take your head off.”

Added albums with all public appearances from 2003, a year often cited as Meryl's comeback year. After taking a break from films for three years she was brought back to the spotlight with her performances in "The Hours" and "Adaptation", the latter winning her a Golden Globe - (the fourth of her career and the first since 1983) as well as an Academy Award nomination, breaking the record for most nominations by any actor with 13 nods. Also, she was honored with the French César Award and promoted the highly acclaimed "Angels in America", released in late 2003. Pictures from these and many more events can be found in the Image Library.

TIMES ONLINE: MERYL STREEP TALKS POLITICS AND PASSION
Posted: 2007-10-06 | Source: Webmaster

Article courtesy the Times Online: Here’s a cinema parlour game: what voice or character will Meryl Streep adopt next? A crackle of anticipation attends each of the actress’s transformations. Lately, Streep seems drawn to playing bad, from the withering fashion dominatrix in The Devil Wears Prada to the Machiavellian politician overseeing the covert torture of terrorist suspects in Rendition, released on October 19. But the face is never fixed. In Lions for Lambs, the festival’s Times Gala film (and world premiere), she is a compromised journalist, and she is also donning bell-bottoms and glittery platforms in the movie of Mamma Mia!opposite Pierce Brosnan. “I’ll be singing, not lip-synching,” this master chameleon assures us. The full article can be read at The Times Online or in the press archive.

Also, many thanks to Riikka for making Simply Streep her Site of the Month October at the wonderful Glamour Reese Witherspoon. Here's the lovely text she has written: "Simply Streep is, undoubtedly, the ultimate online resource dedicated to Reese's Rendition co-star and living legend Meryl Streep. Like Ms. Streep herself, this site is unlike any other. Features include an extensive biography, information on Meryl's many movies, press archive, a lot of multimedia and much more! A must see!"
