"RIBBON OF SAND", NARRATED BY MERYL STREEP, AIRS FEBRUARY 25
Posted: 2008-02-24 | Source: Webmaster |
At once exaltation and elegy, RIBBON OF SAND profiles the famed Outer Banks of North
Carolina and the transitory islands doomed to disappear. Ribbon of Sand was written,
produced and directed by award-winning environmental filmmaker John Grabowska.
Actress Meryl Streep interprets the writings by Rachel Carson, and Academy Award winner
Todd Boekelheide composed an original orchestral score for the film. Rather than focusing
only on the barrier islands, Ribbon of Sand examines all the interrelated elements of the
coastal ecosystem, from the vast coastal plains to the shallow sounds. Offshore, the thin
strips of barrier island sand rise just above sea level, the sound side rimmed with salt
marsh grasses, the ocean side with low dunes that bear the brunt of fierce wave action.
"Ribbon of Sand" premieres Monday, February 25, 2008. Check
Local Listings to see when it is airing on your local PBS station.

STREEP FILM ABOUT CAMPUS VIOLENCE GETS RELEASE DATE
Posted: 2008-02-16 | Source: Webmaster |
Article courtesy Globe and Mail:
A Meryl Streep movie about a Chinese graduate student studying in the United States who
turns violent has secured an American release date in New York after being postponed
following last year's deadly Virginia Tech shootings, its distributor said yesterday,
just hours after another American student went on a campus rampage in Illinois that left
five dead. Dark Matter, which also stars Liu Ye, one of China's rising stars, will debut
in New York on April 11 and be released elsewhere after that, said Gary Rubin, president
of First Independent Pictures. Rubin said the film, directed by Chinese-born director
Chen Shizheng, had been scheduled for release last year, but producers and investors
shelved it "out of respect for the Virginia Tech incident." Additionally, the film has
a new theatrical poster as well that can be viewed at

"HOLOCAUST" 30th ANNIVERSARY TO RELEASE ON DVD, MAY 27
Posted: 2008-02-06 | Source: Webmaster |
The following news come from a press statement released by CBS DVD and Paramount Home
Entertainment: An original TV dramatization of one of the
most monstrous crimes in world history - the slaughter of 6 million Jews by the Nazis.
Dramatically and definitively, the story covers an entire
decade, the eventful years from
1935 to 1945. HOLOCAUST focuses on the tragedy and triumph of a single family - the Weiss
family. Their story is told in counter-poise to that of another fictional family, that of
Erik Dorf, who portrays a Nazi aide to Germany's infamous Heydrich. Starring a brilliant
international cast and filmed on location in Berlin and Vienna. Running time for this DVD
package is 7 hours and 44 minutes. Video is in the original Full Frame, and audio specs
and pricing isn't available just yet. Neither is the package art or extras (if any),
but stay tuned for more information closer to its release. Edit: The following
addition to the "Holocaust" DVD release was posted today by |
|
tvshowsondvd.com:
This will be a 3-disc set, and we're told by our retailer contacts that no information has
been provided by the studio about bonus material, so they don't expect to see any included.
However, the packaging artwork has become available, and it features a very nice picture
of Meryl Streep in the center, with James Woods on the right and Michael Moriarty on the
left. |
BENFIT OF THE "DOUBT"
Posted: 2008-02-06 | Source: Webmaster |
Here comes a first article on the making of "Doubt" by
The Daily News, the online version features pictures from the set as well, altough
none with Meryl: Movie crews were in Bedford-Stuyvesant last week shooting scenes for the
film version of John Patrick Shanley’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play "Doubt." The film stars
Meryl Streep as a nun who becomes concerned about the relationship between one of her
students and a priest played by Philip Seymour Hoffman. In previous Brooklyn-related
roles, Streep won a Best Actress Oscar for "Sophie’s Choice," which was set in Flatbush,
and Hoffman won Best Actor for playing Truman Capote, who lived in Brooklyn Heights.
Shanley also qualifies as a Brooklyn movie notable. He won the Best Original Screenplay
Oscar for "Moonstruck," which was filmed in Carroll Gardens and Brooklyn Heights. Though
scenes were shot at Nostrand Ave. and Halsey St. last week, the film is actually set in
the Bronx, where filming has also been going on in recent weeks. The full article can be read

WHY MERYL STREEP IS THE QUEEN OF HOLLYWOOD
Posted: 2008-02-04 | Source: Webmaster |
Article courtesy the Daily Telegraph:
The star of 'Plenty' is the most consistently engaging actress in the movies, says Marc
Lee. Watching Norma Desmond in Sunset Blvd, Billy Wilder's lacerating love letter to
Hollywood, it's easy to overlook the fact that this forgotten star descending into
wild-eyed madness in her mausoleum of a mansion is only 50 years old. Almost six decades
on, it seems that the movie industry remains just as convinced that once an actress hits
her half-century she is over the hill. Above-the-title actors of a certain age abound
these days - Jack Nicholson, Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Harrison Ford were all born in
the '40s or earlier - but where are the mature women with enduring box-office appeal?
Susan Sarandon (61), Helen Mirren (62) and Judi Dench (73) have had their moments, and
67-year-old Julie Christie is Oscar-nominated this year. However, none has been as
consistently engaging - or more garlanded - than Meryl Streep, who will be 59 in June.
