In a few hours, the Golden Globe Awards will be presented, and if you believe the oddsmakers and blogosphere, Meryl is having best chances to win Best Actress for “The Iron Lady”. She has made records already for nominations (twenty-six) and wins (seven), being honored quite early in her career – for “Kramer vs. Kramer”, “The French Lieutenant’s Woman” and “Sophie’s Choice” – and quite recent again – for “Adaptation”, “Angels in America”, “The Devil Wears Prada” and “Julie & Julia”. Part of the reason why Meryl has won more Globes than Oscars is because the Hollywood Foreign Press Association splits acting categories into Drama and Comedy – this way she scored two comedy prizes while the Academy Awards went with the Drama winners (Helen Mirren and Sandra Bullock). You’ll often read that the HFPA loves Meryl Streep and will nominate her for anything she’s doing, and while there might be a grain of truth to that, she has been overlooked just as often. Meryl was nominated almost every year throughout the 1990s, receiving 8 nominations in 10 years, without winning any.
Meryl has accepted four of her seven Golden Globes in person, and each of her acceptance speeches have been highlights. Have a look at her speeches by clicking the previews above.
Her stiffest competition this year is Viola Davis, having received praise from the press and critics awards. An actress who’s been working for fifteen years on film and television, Davis had her breakthrough four years ago, ironically opposite Meryl Streep in “Doubt”, for which she received her first Oscar nomination. If you recall the 2009 Screen Actors Guild Awards, Meryl shouted in her acceptance speech, that “someone please give her a movie!”. It happened, and my feeling tells me that, tonight, Viola will win the Golden Globe. What speaks for her is that “The Help” has been a critical and commercial success while “The Iron Lady” has won raves for Meryl’s performance but has received mixed reviews for the film (I personally think it’s about the individual performances, the films have their own categories). Whenever I read somewhere that Meryl is campaigning herself harder for an Oscar this year than any time before (instead of acknowledging that she’s promoting a film whose release falls into Oscar season), I feel reminded that she has taken every opportunity to praise Viola Davis and her performance. She’s certainly proud of her work, and, I assume, would be thrilled for her colleague to be recognized. That being said, I, and I’m sure the majority of you, would be just as thrilled to see Meryl taking the stage tonight. Rooting for actors at award ceremonies is the most nonsense and fun of it all. So let’s keep our fingers crossed for tonight.
Do you think Meryl is a lock for winning tonight? Share your thoughts in the comments!

I would have been able to handle these losses, but if Meryl Streep is taken for granted any longer in the Oscar race, it will be a travesty! IT IS TIME and LONG overdue.

I agree with what you said it is about the perforamace and through i have not been anle to see The Iron Lady yet what i have seen of it on tv it looks very good. I think Meryl has a very good chance of winning this year and I’m hopping she does win, but good luck to Meryl and all the other nominees.

Meryl is ALWAYS a winner with me! However, I do feel that this year’s momentum will lie with Ms. Davis of “The Help.” Once Meryl comes back with an unabashed critical and popular hit, Oscar #3 won’t be able to be pried from her hands!

Unfortunately, history shows that Meryl is never a “lock” for any of the great work she has done! She should have won every time she was nominated, if you ask me! However, if she can just win one, I hope it’ll be an Oscar because I know she is very proud of this work and it would mean more people would see it if she wins that. Fingers and toes crossed and a prayer said! Always a winner to me, Ms. Meryl:)

I am really really uncertain about this, of course I want her to win but the Critics Awards brought some doubts. I have a theory though that maybe the subject of “Margaret Thatcher” is for some reason more important or significant outside of the US than it is in the country, I don’t really know, I don’t live there but I have a feeling that many people don’t really have an interest in this matter (just as Meryl said about herself in the interviews). That in turn would mean that her chances for a globe are maybe better than they were for the Critics, let’s hope it’s true.
Of course I really hope she will win because A: she deserves it and B: it would make things really exciting because I think Michelle Williams will win as well and then there would be Viola, Michelle and Meryl each having won a major award, I guess the Oscars would then be decided at the SAGs as they are all nominated in the same category there…
However, if she doesn’t win I will be deeply disappointed because then there would be few chances for the SAG and Oscar and that would mean she would not have won ANY of the major awards which would be a shame!
PS: I agree with ervery word from Ana and pamh!

Good luck Meryl!
I really don’t know though, even though she is always the winner for me. Maybe the GG goes to Viola and the Oscar goes to Meryl. But she deserve them both:)

She’s getting a lot of hype fro this role, and he is certainly the favourite, which honestly never happens. People always say there is a possibility, but she’s never ever the favourite.
I’d be worried about Viola Davis, and I know Meryl would be over the moon if she won, but I don’t see her winning for sure. Honestly, Meryl’s performance was extremely powerful and downright amazing. She took on makeup and a new accent, and had to portray a real-life public figure, which is hard to do. The voters tend to favour biopics and actresses that play real women, so here’s hoping she wins.
Either way, I’ll burst into tears, but let’s just hope that they’re out of joy.

I can only agree with most of the things you said.
My feeling tells me that Viola Davis will be taking home the Golden Globe, whereas Meryl will win the Oscar.
I could be wrong of course, but it is definitely going to be exciting to watch.
I would love for Meryl to win, of course, but there is no doubt that Viola Davis is a deserving opponent.
I personally did get quite mad (although I do know that it is rather stupid ;) at other actresses winning prizes that I felt should have been Meryl’s, I can accept it more easily with some than with others. I get why Helen Mirren won, for instance and Viola Davis would be no different. Why Sandra Bullock won, on the other hand, I will never understand, but that’s another story…
Anyhow, I’m gonna be watching tonight and hey, if Meryl doesn’t win we can always get some satisfaction out of the fact that she would probably be as happy about Viola winning as she would be about herself – that’s how amazing a person she is! :)

She should but I’m not sure she will. But if she doesn’t win that would increase her chances on an Oscar, I think, because Viola Davies seems to be a very strong contender so there is a chance that the voters will want to split the awards thus giving Meryl one or the other.

Well, she has not won the Drama Globe for 29 years and unfortunately I don’t think this will change tonight.
If TIL would had get more nominations, then I could believe it.
J&J and IC were at least nominated as best comedy, okay even MM! was but she had no chance to win that year anyway.
I do think Viola Davis will take this as well, but Meryl has praised her so much the last weeks, she’ll be very happy and proud for her former Doubt-partner, I’m sure.
Meryl will always come back, we know that. And someday it will be finally her time again. 8)

Oh, it would be fantastic if Meryl won a Golden Globe, but since Viola Davis won Critics Choice award I’m afraid she can win this also. But I don’t want to lose faith and hope our Meryl will win.

i’ve never wanted someone to win an award more than i want meryl streep to win the globe, sag and oscar! when she was nominated for j and j I was rooting 100% for her but i kind of knew that sandra bullock would win! but this performance is so strong and its clear that she outshines the rest (although they are also amazing). if she doesnt win tonight it will be a travesty!!!! If Meryl doesn’t win, I shall be throwing a tantrum of Thatcher proportions! She is amazing in this movie… We’ll see.. The globes are known for surprises, let’s hope Meryl gets it! She deserves it, as well as the Oscar!

I saw Iron Lady and to me it was reminiscent of Meryl taking multiple roles in “Angels in America”. She played the elder Margaret- who is moving into the twilight of her life– so beautifully it really touched me as my own mother recently passed and had some similar issues. Meryl was astonishing. She played the Prime Minister in her prime and with all the dimensions of certainty Thatcher had about what was right and not necessarily factor in the input of others. The third role was the maturing politician on the rise to become Prime Minister.
I have become rather ambivalent about award shows, mostly the Oscars.yet still rooting for Meryl . Most of the top critics had ranked Streep’s performance as superlative and I have not always heard that about Viola’s performance. I have not seen the Help so I really can’t comment. Viola Davis was great in Doubt and on tv often playing the defense attorney on Law and Order. I really thought Meryl should have won the Oscar for Doubt. Her performance was riveting. I really feel she should win the Oscar this year for Iron Lady but sadly I think what happens is a reductionist view. Let’s nominate her but give the award to somebody who hasn’t been noticed or is popular with the younger crowd.
I am going on a limb and predict she will win tonight and win the Oscar. If I am wrong, I will be disappointed but all of us know the talent she is and the great human being she is even better at being. It would be a great night (at the Oscars) if her co-star Colin Firth from Mamma Mia presented her with what would likely be her last win, if only that could happen. Thanks to this site for bringing so much joy to all of us about an actress, a person who is truly a hero of mine –and perhaps of yours-Meryl Streep.

Oh man, my sentiments exactly! God knows how much I want to see Meryl taking the stage tonight… You just need to go to twitter and search for Meryl Streep to see that EVERYONE is saying Meryl’s gonna win! A huge part of me tells me that is going to be Viola. Despite of thinking that Meryl deserves the Oscar and GG more than EVER I don’t blame it! On the other hand hopes die last and that makes me feel even worse! Anyway I’m praying for her! I really think Viola is going to have another chance to win the awards, it’s about time cuz she could have other opportunity to do a similar character. I can’t say the same about Meryl! Fingers crossed guys!!!! xx

I think she’ll win. She has the most standout performance and the fact she is nominated and the film isn’t makes it even more of a standout performance. Think back to the year Sandra Bullock won for Blindside-same situation. If she doesn’t win this year, I hope it’s her year for the Oscars-it’s long overdue.
