According to the Hollywood Reporter, The Weinstein Co finally seems ready to move ahead on its long-planned adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play, August: Osage County. The company announced Wednesday that it has attached Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep to the project, which will be directed by John Wells (Company Men). TWC says it is eying a fall production start. Written by Tracy Letts, the play follows the women of a family whose lives have splintered in many directions until a crisis bring them back to their childhood home and to the dysfunctional woman who raised them. Streep will play the pill-popping matriarch, while Roberts will portray her daughter. News of the pairing first surfaced in 2010 but deals and schedules took time to figure out. Streep also is in the middle of the best actress Oscar race for the Weinsteins’ The Iron Lady, and the announcement allows TWC to put out a nice quote about her from Roberts while the voting is still open: “After seeing Meryl Streep’s mesmerizing portrayal as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, it has me even more excited and proud to co-star with her.”

While I am thrilled that Meryl will be playing the mother, I am so sad that Charlize Theron won’t be playing her daughter. I remember when this movie was first announced and they said Charlize and Meryl were said to be playing the mother daughter roles, I was so excited, because I think they would be the perfect mother/daughter pair. Can you imagine the performances they would give not only seperately, but together?! There’s still time to change the casting, so I wish they would find someone besides Julia Roberts, because although I like her, I just could not see her as Meryl’s daughter, at all.

i agree with jansen and liezl, kate would be perfect for the role, but roberts have some nice performances, despite the fact she doesn’t look alike meryl. so i’m pozitive the co-work will be wonderful

    Already can’t wait!

This enterprise seems very interesting to me, I don´t like very much Julia Roberts for Meryl´s daughter, but it is a done deal, the story it´s very interesting, really the curiosity is killing me

  • Danielle

I actually really look forward to this movie. I really like Julia Roberts and apart from the fact that the two don’t really look alike, they’re both wonderfully talented women. Meryl will be fantastic, as always, and I’m sure Julia will bring plenty to the table.

  • Gemma

I don’t like Julia Roberts, but i’m happy for Meryl!

  • Andrea

    Meryl and Julia Roberts wonderful…..

  • Laura

Exciting!!! I agree, Julia Roberts would not have been my personal choice as I don’t particularly like her as an actress, but Meryl always elevates other people’s performances, and so I don’t think we have anything to worry about. This part is amazing, and Meryl WILL completely own it, as she always does!

  • liezl

I don’t like Roberts too. Happy with the movie pushing through finally but would be happiest with Blanchett instead of Roberts.

  • Grace

on another thought and apart from Julia’s doubtful acting abilities, Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts do not look like mother and daughter at all.

  • jansen

Two words : Cate Blanchett. This will be the perfect vehicle for Meryl and Cate to chew up the scenery.

I kind of agree with you Marc, it would have been fun to see Meryl and one of her children on the screen again together. But maybe not for this movie, and at another time. And yeah I also think Julia Roberts isn’t the best choise they have made, they could have found someone better. Guess we’ll have to wait and see, we all know Meryl will be fabulous as always, and maybe Julia wont do that wrong as we think she will! but God, I do not want to wait that long to see it!!

Great for Meryl! Would rather Laura Linney, over Roberts.

  • Grace

Mamie is too young for the part, but I don’t think Julia Roberts is that great a fit either. They could have gone for Hilary Swank, Cate Blanchett or even Helena Bonham-Carter. Obviously they wanted someone well-known, but that choice could have turned out a little better.
I guess I’m just not a big fan of most of Julia’s work, but we’ll see and after all, everything that Meryl is in turns out just great :)

  • Sonja

I don’t know if this annoucement would really help Meryl’s chances for BA Oscar this year. It might hurt her more.
I really hate this “next time” thing, but voters still could think that way. *sigh*

But well, I look forward to it. I might be in a minority, but I still like Julia Roberts. I wouldn’t mind her playing with Meryl, although I still hope they might cast Gillian Anderson.
    God, I would die happily….

Great news! It’s always interesting to see Meryl play with other good actress. I would like to see her with Jodie Foster one day, but I’m not sure that will happen… And I guess her daughters try to be “out of their mom” to construct their career, so we may not see them play together. But that’s just my opinion;)

  • lcm

That’s good news! I’m not a fan of Julia Roberts but who knows? She can surprise me!
The other thing that bothers me is the fact that this is a Weinstein production, so we’ll have to wait the end of 2013 to finally see it! And honestly I can’t wait to watch it!

  • Marc

It would have been great to see Meryl’s daughter, Mammie Gummer, play the role of her daughter in this movie. I don’t think Julia Roberts is a good fit. Time will tell, I guess.

  • Rebecca

    I can’t wait!!!
