According to this article, the big box office news is that Sony’s counter programming gamble with Meryl Streep in “Hope Springs” could pay off. The film opened on Wednesday and has almost $10 million in ticket sales. Friday night accounted for about half of that. If it holds up tonight and Sunday, “Hope Springs”–with Tommy Lee Jones and Steve Carell–could be a nice little hit. Then Sony will bring it back out for Oscar consideration, with nominations going to Streep and Jones at least. What a pleasant turn of events. Sony’s Amy Pascal can sleep tonight. Streep has a lot of good will built up. And audiences who are depending on that have found an excellent film.

Meryl was perfection as Kaye. All women should thank her for bringing this great film to the world. I recommended it to my 21 and 25 year old daughters because it is a rare opportunity in today’s films to see great acting in a film about real issues and no explosions. Tommy Lee Jones was excellent. Due to his portrayal of Arnold in addressing the issues men his age face my husband of 34 years payed attention to the film. He is someone men can relate to. We laughed, empathized, I cried, he felt like it but didn’t and we both enjoyed the movie. We had a good conversation afterward too.

I thought the film was wonderful and so did my husband. He cried. Meryl Streeps’ performance was oscar-worthy again. Tommy Lee did an excellent job portraying the the uptight husband finally able to wake up and demonstrate his love for his wife. Movie opened up interesting conversation with my husband of 32 yrs.

I went and seen it on the 11th and the theater was packed and i was the youngest there (I’m 25). Right from the start i was laugh. Cant wait till her next movie comes out.

This was a delightful movie and so funny. What wonderful performances from Meryl., Tommy Lee Jones and Steve Carell. I was disappointed that there was not a larger audience on this Sunday. However the audience which was in attendance just filled the cinema with laughter.

This is going to be a strong contender for the Academy Awards and the Golden Globes. I just wish there were more quality films like this and fewer blockbusters and I would be in the cinema far oftener with quality films like thi . ( I also recently enjoyed Steve Carell’s great performance in Crazy Stupid Love. Another very funny movie and well made.

WOW…Hope Springs is an excellent movie. Meryl Streep was perfection AGAIN transforming into yet another character proving again she is the greatest actress ever! She has perfect timing on her mannerisms, expressions, etc. Tommy Lee Jones was perfect for the role of Arnold and he and Streep worked very well together. It is sad that the Academy Awards seems to think in terms of it’s someone else’s turn to get nominated and win instead of rewarding THE BEST performance. Meryl Streep’s performance in Hope Srings is the best I have seen this year (other than her performance in Iron Lady which I saw in January). Hope Springs is a must see and it is not a movie for just the older audience. Everyone can take something from this movie.

GREAT review on CBS’ Sunday Morning (8-12-2012) this morning, too! See David Edelstein’s review at:

I knew she had a hit on her hands!
Again, the film is excellent and everyone should see it!
I was a little surprised at the lower number of theaters it was in, but it just shows that most of the industry still doubts Meryl’s fan base and her basic appeal!
    Too bad for them.
It will be fun to track the box office numbers over the next few weeks; I bet it holds up well into September!
    You go, Meryl!

  • Rebecca

@charlie: I´ve seen numbers that it will reach the $20m mark according to “Box Office Mojo”!

I’m a little disappointed the film won’t seem to clear the $20m mark this weekend but I hope good word-of-mouth will keep it steady for a few weeks.

Also, it hasn’t been as widely released as other Meryl hits (yet!) so let’s see. I just fear the whole sex angle is putting some people off.

I love how people are already talking Oscar consideration though, I think a lot of us had counted Meryl out this year! :)

i cant wait to see Hope Springs. I am upset that on opening weekend the closest theater with it playing is over 75 miles away, yet the action flicks are right here in town. And yes I have talked to the theater manger, didnt do much good. I also confronted him when Iron Lady was released. So as soon as I can (day off) Im going to Tulsa to watch Meryl and Tommy Lee.
