Meryl Streep has been “in talks” to be director Cameron Crowe’s first choice to play Joni Mitchell in his long-gestalting biopic on the legendary singer. While no big industry website has picked up the news so far, Streep is known to be a fan of Joni Mitchell, and has been a surprise addition to her Joni and the Jam performance last year (it would make sense she was having a front row seat to do research). Now, World of Reel, which has been writing about the biopic before, is having an exlusive scoop that Anya Taylor-Joy is in talks to play Mitchell during her peak years in the film, while Streep will play Mitchell during the later part of the singer’s career – namely, around the time she suffered a brain aneurysm in 2015. The article also states that Crowe had been eyeing a March start for the biopic, hoping to get cameras rolling before Streep started shooting the “Devil Wears Prada” sequel. However, plans shifted when Crowe’s Los Angeles home was among the properties affected by the January wildfires, forcing production to be delayed. It’s unclear whether filming will now commence this fall or be pushed to early 2026, but signs are pointing to momentum finally building on what will be Crowe’s first narrative feature in over ten years. I always take news like this with a grain of salt – only time will tell us if all involved move on with the project. The complete article can be read here. Many thanks to Alvaro and Glenn for the heads-up.
