Portraits by the Women’s Refugee Commission

1997 | The Women's Refugee Commission | 9 minutes
The Women's Refugee Commission improves the lives and protects the rights of women, children and youth displaced by conflict and crisis. We research their needs, identify solutions and advocate for programs and policies to strengthen their resilience and drive change in humanitarian practice. Since our founding in 1989, we have been a leading expert on the needs of refugee women and children, and the policies that can protect and empower them. In 1997, Meryl Streep hosted a video with portraits of women's stories.

The Women’s Refugee Commission is the only organization solely dedicated to improving the lives and protecting the rights of displaced women, children and young people. They conduct fact-finding missions and research and then advise international agencies, governments and other organizations on ways to improve humanitarian policies and practices. The WRC’s advocacy results in real and lasting changes, ensuring that refugees and displaced people can lead healthier, safer and more productive lives.
