Last night Streep took to the stage at Koerner Hall with the Takács Quartet to perform a series of readings from author Philip Roth’s death-obsessed 2006 novel, Everyman. It might not have been a singing voice, but it was a voice worth listening to. “It’s best to give while your hand is still warm,” Streep. Excerpts were paired with four works from composers Pärt, Britten, Shostakovich and Schubert, performed by the Takács Quartet at Streep’s side. It was a solemn, meditative evening devoted to the examination of life through death. It explored the bittersweet process of growing old and weighing the marks of life’s purpose against death’s ultimate finality. As a writer, Roth writes exceptionally well for women. The words transcended to become stories about all of us; Everyman.

On Wednesday evening, Meryl Streep joined Gloria Steinem for a Manhattan screening of Leslee Udwin’s film, “India’s Daughter. The controversial documentary – banned in India – is about the protests following the brutal gang rape of 23-year-old medical student Jyoti Singh on a moving Delhi bus in 2012. India’s Daughter will screen at the Village East Cinema from October 23-29 before its November 16 broadcast on PBS.

As previously reported, “Suffragette” has opened yesterday’s BFI London Film Festival. There has been a lot of bad press towards the film (not to confuse with actual critics who have seen and enjoyed the film) and online hysteria regarding the Time Out London photoshoot, and I’m going to write more about it this weekend (or probably just ignore it), but for now, let’s celebrate the film’s premiere with pictures from the photocall, press conference and premiere. Meryl’s still at the Telluride Film Festival after Friday’s first showing of “Suffragette”. On Saturday, a second screening for the film took place, which was attended by Streep, director Sarah Gavron, writer Abi Morgan, and producers Alison Owen and Faye Ward. Also that day, Gavron and Streep joined director Tom McCarthy, actress Rachel McAdams, actor Geza Rohrig and director Laszlo Nemes for a seminar at Elks Park. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts Los Angeles will salute Meryl Streep, Sam Mendes and James Corden with Britannia Awards at its October 30 ceremony at the Beverly Hilton. Additional honorees will be announced soon. Streep is the recipient of this year’s Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for Excellence in Film, which the org said “is presented to a unique individual, upon whose work is stamped the indelible mark of authorship and commitment, and who has lifted the craft to new heights.” Prior recipients include Robert De Niro, Clint Eastwood and Tom Hanks. The Britannia Awards are BAFTA Los Angeles’ highest accolade. The honors are presented annually at a gala dinner. Proceeds support BAFTA Los Angeles’ ongoing education, scholarship, community outreach and archival projects.

On Wednesday, Tom Brokaw was honored for his continued contributions to the always-anticipated Mostly Mozart Festival each year at Lincoln Center. His introduction was given by Meryl Streep. “As a journalist, Tom has not only reported and delivered the news, but he has represented a certain kind of authority in our culture. Like a dad, he explains stuff to you without talking down to you. Or, when he was younger, a super smart, super straight-shooting, reliable friend. A narrator of our lives,” Ms. Streep said during her introduction. “Although he has received more awards, and more accolades, than anybody in his profession,” she later added in closing with a laugh, just before folding her speech papers into Mr. Brokaw’s breast pocket. “May I say, as someone with deep experience in this area, just one more isn’t going to kill you!” Pictures from the event have been added to the photo gallery, with many many thanks to my friend Claudia.

Theatre East and Yale Alumni Association of New York will present Elizabeth Parrish with the Laurette Taylor Award on Thursday, May 28th at Ramscale Studio South, 463 West Street, in the West Village Highline district, NYC. The benefit starts at 7pm with an exclusive cocktail reception, followed by dinner at 8pm. The award will be presented to Ms. Parrish by Kate Mulgrew. The ceremony will include tributes by alumna Meryl Streep and the Stella Adler Studio’s Artistic Director, Tom Oppenheim. Ms. Streep, who studied under Ms. Parrish at Yale, has publicly credited Ms. Parrish’s teachings in connection to her performance as the Witch in the recent film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s musical Into The Woods. Meryl Streep led a chorus of stars honoring the Indian woman whose brutal rape and subsequent death has inspired a documentary so harrowing it has been banned by the Indian government. Streep spoke at the New York City premiere of India’s Daughter, a BBC program which tells the story of Jyoti Singh, a 23-year-old medical student who was set upon by six rapists as she rode a bus in 2012. Singh was injured so badly after the repeated, violent rapes that she later died in hospital. Indian ministers secured a court order banning the documentary in India, for fear it could stoke public anger. Pictures from the screening have been added to the image library.

While this Oscar season has been quiet for Meryl (I guess there’s no big reason to make the rounds this year), she has attended the Women In Film Pre-Oscar Cocktail Party yesterday, where she was photographed with her “The Deer Hunter” co-star John Savage.
