The New Jersey Hall of Fame has announced its class of inductees for 2024—and the group includes some of the biggest names in Hollywood. Meryl Streep, who grew up in Bernardsville, Paul Rudd, who was born in Passaic, and Kevin Smith, a Red Bank native, are on this year’s list, which features 18 New Jerseyans who have achieved greatness in categories including performing arts & entertainment, sports, and education & science. “The 2024 class of inductees of the New Jersey Hall of Fame illustrate the New Jersey ethic of hard work, determination and grit,” Jon F. Hanson, Chairman of the New Jersey Hall of Fame, said in a statement. “We are thrilled to celebrate the contributions of 18 new Inductees so future generations can learn about their journeys.” Streep, one of our country’s most celebrated actors and a three-time Oscar winner, got her start in a fifth-grade play, then starred in musicals at Bernards High School. Things came full circle for the Jersey native in the late ’90s, when her movie One True Thing filmed for several months in nearby Morristown. You can watch the induction ceremony on November 13.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, “The Devil Wears Prada” writer Aline Brosh McKenna is penning a would-be follow-up to the hit film that is being developed and produced by Wendy Finerman, who was behind the original. No deals for the cast are in place. Disney, which would be the studio behind the film following the acquisitions of the original Devil studio Fox 2000, had no comment. The 2006 film based on the book of the same name follows Andy (Hathaway), a recent college journalism graduate as she lands one of the most coveted jobs in publishing as the assistant to Anna Wintour stand-in Miranda Priestly (Streep). Andy dives into the world of magazines and high fashion thanks to her fellow assistant (Blunt). The film grossed a massive $326 million at the worldwide box office and earned Streep an Oscar nomination. Puck first reported the news of the sequel and offered insights into a possible plot where Priestly is still the head of Runway but the magazine has endured the financial headwinds of contemporary publishing and is in a diminished state. Blunt’s one-time assistant would now be an executive at a luxury brand conglomerate that advertises with Runway. While promoting her recent film, The Idea of You, Hathaway told E! she was doubtful about the possibility of a sequel, saying, “I don’t think a continuation of that story is probably ever gonna happen.”

Back in April Nicole Kidman was honored as the recipient of the 49th AFI Life Achievement Award. Yesterday, TNT finally aired the ceremony and posted an array of speeches online, including Meryl’s final speech before handing the AFI award to her co-star from “The Hours”, “The Prom” and “Big Little Lies”. It was a heartfelt and very entertaining speech, so make sure to check it out. Screencaptures have been added to the photo gallery.

“Only Murders in the Building” scores nominations at the Golden Globe Awards and a win at the AFI Awards. Streep poses with co-stars Steve Martin, Selena Gomez and Martin Short. In May, Streep is honored at the Cannes Film Festival with an Honorary Palm for her contribution to cinema.

The first half brought a lot of public appearances at awards shows as a nominee for last year’s season of “Only Murders in the Building”. Streep attended the Golden Globes, AFI Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards – and, later in the year, the Primetime Emmy Awards. She also attended the Palm Springs International Film Festival to honor Carey Mulligan, and presented life achievement awards to both Cher at the iHeartRadio Music Awards and to Nicole Kidman at the AFI Life Achievement Awards. In May of 2024, Streep herself picked up an award – the much-publicized Honorary Palme d’Or at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.

In August, the fourth season of “Only Murders in the Building” premiered, and although Meryl returned as Loretta Durkin, her peformance was limited to three episodes. As Vulture wrote, “One thing Only Murders is very good at is strategically timing Meryl Streep’s appearances so we don’t realize that she’s barely in this show”. Later in the year, she joined musician Rufus Wainwright as the narrator of his opera “Dream Requiem” in Paris, narrated a couple of documentaries on the arts and politics, and took part in the television special “Unite for America with Oprah Winfrey” to endorse presidential candidate Kamala Harris.

On Friday, Meryl Streep joined conductor Mikko Franck, the Chœur de Radio France, Maîtrise de Radio France and Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, for the world-premiere of Rufus Wainwright’s “Dream Requiem”. Streep read Lord Byron’s poem “Darkness”, written in July 1816. Introducing the Dream Requiem, Rufus Wainwright wrote: “The music speaks of death, but I wanted it to be inspiring and full of hope at the same time. The work combines two soundworlds: The Latin Requiem text is sung by a large mixed choir, children’s choir and soprano soloist while the Byron text ‘Darkness’, which describes an environmental catastrophe, is spoken by a narrator. Dream Requiem was conceived during the COVID-19 pandemic and is also about the people we have lost during that crisis, for the loss of human connection that we all experienced. The full concert is curerntly available on-demand on the ARTE Concert webiste (at least for French and German viewers) and will be released on DVD later this year. Pictures from the rehearsals, the concert day and screencaptures have been added to the photo gallery.
