It has been a busy weekend for Meryl so far as she has attended the Academy Awards’ Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Symposium yesterday as well – to talk about the makeup process of “The Iron Lady”, alongside the Oscar-nominated makeup team of Marc Coulier and Roy Helland. Sorry . . . I love Meryl Streep, but I was sorely disappointed with the Academy’s choice of Streep over Viola Davis for lead actress. LA Times’ conclusion about their choice is reasonable – “real life” over fiction; however, the “real life” portrayed in the fictional story, The Help, is more relevant to our country’s history that of Margaret Thatcher. Viola Davis gave a voice to thousands of “real life” maids whose struggle remains in the shadows. And Viola depicted it flawlessly. With Streep’s great success, and loyal following (including myself!) she could have made history by handing over that Oscar to Viola. What a news story that would have made!
