Only Murders in the Building season 5 is on the horizon! In a trailer for the hit whodunit show’s upcoming fifth season, Mabel (Selena Gomez), Charles (Steve Martin) and Oliver (Martin Short) dive headfirst into another mystery at the Arconia – this time, the eclectic trio is investigating the death of their longtime doorman, Lester. At the end of season 4, Lester was found dead sitting in a fountain in the courtyard, and the trio immediately suspected foul play. But when they receive a copy of the incident’s police report, Charles, Oliver and Mabel learn Lester’s death has been dubbed an accident – even though it happened in “the most murderous building in New York.” The upcoming season will see the return of characters Howard (Michael Cyril Creighton), Loretta (Meryl Streep), Detective Williams (Da’Vine Joy Randolph), Teddy Dimas (Nathan Lane) and Vince Fish (Richard Kind). New additions to the show’s star-studded cast include Bobby Cannavale, Renée Zellweger, Logan Lerman, Christoph Waltz, Téa Leoni, Keegan-Michael Key, Beanie Feldstein, Dianne Wiest and Jermaine Fowler. Only Murders in the Building season 5 debuts Sept. 9, with three episodes, followed by weekly new episodes on Hulu. The trailer can be watched in the video archive and the season poster can be found in the photo gallery.

“Only Murders in the Building” is coming back for season five with a new mystery to solve, and Hulu announced that the upcoming season will premiere on Sept. 9. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the first three episodes will air on the premiere date, while new episodes will continue to be added to the streaming service on the following Tuesdays. Season five, which was renewed in September 2024, will see original stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, Selena Gomez and Michael Cyril Creighton reprise their roles, while Meryl Streep, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Richard Kind and Nathan Lane will also return in guest starring roles. New cast members for season 5 include Bobby Cannavale, Renée Zellweger, Logan Lerman, Christoph Waltz, Téa Leoni, Keegan-Michael Key, Beanie Feldstein, Dianne Wiest and Jermaine Fowler. In addition to announcing the premiere date and cast, Hulu also shared a synopsis for the new season.
After their beloved doorman, Lester (Teddy Coluca), dies under suspicious circumstances, Charles (Martin), Oliver (Short) and Mabel (Gomez) refuse to believe it was an accident. Their investigation plunges them into the shadowy corners of New York and beyond – where the trio uncovers a dangerous web of secrets connecting powerful billionaires, old-school mobsters and the mysterious residents of the Arconia,” the description read. “The trio discovers a deeper divide between their storied city they thought they knew and the new New York evolving around them – one where the old mob fights to hold on as newer, even more dangerous players emerge.
Earlier today, “Only Murders in the Building” received 7 Emmy nominations (make it 8 if you count a nomination for Hulu’s making of featurette for season 4 – there seem to be categories for everything). Unfortunately, Meryl Streep didn’t make the cut in the Best Supporting Actress category – neither did Steve Martin, Selena Gomez, nor Melissa McCarthy – who was tipped for a Guest Actress nomination. The only acting nomination went to Martin Short, who, earlier this year, received a Screen Actors Guild Award for his performance. The full list of nominations can be found below. The Emmys are handed out on September 14, 2025.
Outstanding Comedy Series
Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series (Martin Short)

As previously speculated (see our post below), Meryl Streep is indeed part of “Only Murders in the Building”‘s cast for season 5. Pictures from the New York set have been published today by various news outlets, as you can see below. We can expect season 5 to premiere this August, like the previous seasons. Edit: Additional magazine scans covering the filming have been added to the photo gallery, with many thanks to Alvaro for sending it in.

Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” is currently filming season 5. Among the new recurring stars added to the series are Renee Zellweger, Christoph Waltz, Keegan-Michael Key and Téa Leoni. But can we also expect more Meryl? There hasn’t been an official announcement, no set-picutres – and quite a closed story line. After leaving season 3 for Hollywood, Streep’s supporting role of Loretta Durkin was reduced to a guest starring appearance in season 4, at which end her character zips off to New Zealand the morning after the wedding because her Grey’s Anatomy spin-off has relocated there. It felt like the writers thought they’re good for now, but there’s a chance to bring her back. On Thursday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, newly-minted Academy Award winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who plays Detective Donna Williams on the show, promoted her new film and was asked about working with Meryl Streep. When asked by Kimmel if it was “everything she hoped it would be?”. Randolph replies: “Not yet. However, and I say that because I’m greedy, I want more. So if you go back to season 3, I lock her up. So I just put handcuffs on her. But, John Hoffman, the showrunner, told me that he’s gonna make it up to me this season, so yeah.” So, is this confirmation of a return to the series? It’s quite vage and could also mean a bigger arch for Detective Donna Williams – or in fact, more Meryl in season 5. You can watch the conversation (starting at 1:35 minutes) on Jimmy Kimmel Live’s Youtube channel. Let’s see what season 5 will bring us when it most probably premieres in the Summer.
“Only Murders in the Building” was a surprise winner at Sunday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards in the category of Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series as well as a Lead Actor win for Martin Short. “We never win, this is so weird,” Gomez said on stage. “Marty and Steve aren’t here because… you know, they don’t really care,” she quipped to a big laugh from the audience. Martin Short couldn’t attend the ceremony due to a COVID infection and Steve Martin due to a prior commitment. However, Short published a note regarding hin win later, courtesy Deadline: “The honor of being in Only Murders In The Building is the most spectacular compliment anyone could be given. The honor of being awarded by your peers is even greater. Thank you so so much”. Gomez was joined on stage by Only Murders regular Michael Cyril Creighton, Kumail Nanjiani, Molly Shannon and Richard Kind. Meryl Streep did not win the ensemble prize since her performance in season 4 was reduced from supporting player to guest performer. And while neither she nor Short attended the ceremony, I guess die-hard fans spotted Streep during the broadcast anyway – she narrated the segment for the SAG AFTRA Foundation Relief about the L.A. fires. There was also a heartfelt mention to one of Streep’s film characters, and real-life whistleblower, in Jane Fonda’s acceptance speech for Life Achievement: “This is a good time for a little Norma Rae, Karen Silkwood, or Tom Joad. We must not isolate. We must stay in community. We must help the vulnerable. We must find ways to project an inspiring vision of the future.”
Only Murders in the Building has received four Golden Globe nominations for its fourth season. Stars Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez have all been nominated for Golden Globes for their respective roles of Charles Hayden-Savage, Oliver Putnam and Mabel Mora in the Hulu series. The series was also nominated for best television series – comedy or musical. Both Martin and Short were nominated for best performance by an actor in a television series – musical or comedy. Martin’s nomination marks the fourth consecutive year he has been nominated in the best television actor in a musical or comedy series category for the series. This nomination marks his ninth overall Golden Globes nomination and could be his first-ever win. Meryl Streep is left out of this year’s nomination since her three-episode turn counts as a guest start instead of a supporting performance. So, we have to sit and wait until next year’s Emmy nominations to see if she makes the cut in the guest actress category.
It’s a wrap for “Only Murders in the Building”‘s fourth season – with a fifth season already announced, and a slight chance that Meryl Streep’s Loretta might return. At least she’s not written out of the story completely. Screencaptures from the final episode “My Best Friend’s Wedding” have been added to the photo gallery. If you want to rewind this or any previous episodes, make sure to check out the career page, which features episode guides and in-depth information on each episode of the show. Enjoy.
