On December 6, Hunter College marked the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights with a powerful performance by actor and advocate Meryl Streep as Eleanor Roosevelt, who led the drafting of the declaration. The performance, staged as a dialogue with Navi Pillay, a former UN High Commissioner of Human Rights, took place at a star-studded reception at Hunter’s Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute. Pillay is now Leader in Residence at Roosevelt House’s Human Rights Program. “This event would be inspiring in any setting, but the ambience here is special — because we know that here Eleanor lived as she blossomed from wife and mother to social activist to political and policy advocate to admired leader in her own right,” said Jonathan F. Fanton Director of Roosevelt House Harold Holzer. Pictures from the event have been added to the photo gallery.

The Academy Museum Gala returned for its third year on Sunday night, honoring Meryl Streep, Michael B. Jordan, Oprah Winfrey and Sofia Coppola among an A-list group of guests. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Los Angeles event — which was originally scheduled for Oct. 14 but was delayed until December following Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel — serves as the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures’ marquee annual fundraiser, raising vital funds to support museum exhibitions, education initiatives and public programming; it has also quickly become one of Hollywood’s starriest nights. The gala raised more than $10 million in support of the museum, and presented four awards to reflect the its mission to advance the understanding, celebration and preservation of film and to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema. Greta Gerwig presented Streep with the Academy Museum Gala Icon Award, celebrating her significant global cultural impact, and Chloe Zhao presented The Visionary Award to Coppola. Pictures from the event have been added to the photo gallery.

Meryl Streep made a surprise appearance at yesterday’s Albie Awards in New York City. The awards, run by The Clooney Foundation for Justice, exist “to shine a protective spotlight on courageous justice defenders who are at risk,” according to an official online statement. The Albies are named after anti-apartheid hero Justice Albie Sachs, who received a lifetime achievement award at the inaugural event. This year, Dr Denis Mukwege from the Republic of Congo received this prestigious award for his life-changing work as gynecologist, treating survivors of wartime sexual violence. Viola Davis presented Dr Mukwege with the award. “I thank you for radicalising love, for making these women feel whole, and thank you for not leaving them behind,” the actor said to the awardee. Meryl Streep also addressed the room. “Throughout history, there have been tyrants. And regardless of how long it takes, they always fall,” she said. Pictures from the event have been added to the photo gallery.

On October 13, 2022, Meryl Streep accepted the Alumnae/i Association of Vassar College (AAVC) Distinguished Achievement Award. According to a lenghty article published on the Vassar website, her movie-star charisma was immediately evident, but when Streep addressed the 1,500 members of the Vassar community—including fellow members of the class of ’71 – the three-time Academy Award winner didn’t talk much about the movies. She chose instead to tell her audience about how Vassar had shaped her life, setting her on a path of social awareness and activism. “One value of a Vassar education is that it kind of dooms you to a life of awareness …”Streep said. “Once you know how to search out and credit the facts around certain problems, you are called on by your conscience to act on them. The Vassar conscience rings a bell in your head; it’s a call to action in your heart.” Pictures from the event have been added to the photo gallery – with credit to Vassar College / Karl Rabe, the complete article can be read over here.
